Director’s Note

Memorial Theatre is dedicated to creating opportunities for students to explore theatre, encouraging the growth of students as artists, and celebrating student achievement in theatre. We are proud members of the International Thespian Society (Troupe 2980).

Spot a falling star and you get one. Make one on your birthday, but only after you’ve blown out the candles. Or is it before…? A particular lamp may grant you three and only three.

A wish may be the first metaphysical concept that most of us learn. And WISHES can be powerful things. They can motivate us. Or freeze us in place. They can amplify the reward of acquisition. Or they can intensify feelings of regret. WISHES can attach themselves to our days and our nights. And often offer hope and despair in equal measure.

For the 2023-2024 season of Memorial Theatre, we have selected the theme of WISHES. Each of our mainstage productions will explore various aspects of this human expression of desire. We open the season with She Kills Monsters (Young Adventurers Edition) by Qui Nguyen which takes us through the ways fantasy can fulfill our wishes. Our winter musical will be Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine. This recently revived Broadway hit collapses several well-known fairy tales into a journey about wishes and what comes after. Our one act play contest piece will be Gut Girls by Sarah Daniels which examines the consequences of making wishes for other people.

We ask, we hope, and we wish for you to join us for an exciting season that confronts dungeons, dragons, wolves, giants, and do-gooders!
